Today's Headlines

In an offensive on Sunday, Allied (Canadian-led) forces in Afghanistan managed to kill two hundred Taliban fighters in a single battle. Four Canadians were killed. Tragic though the loss of any Canadian life is, I – and I believe any person with even a passing acquaintance with military history – recognize the battle for what it is: a brilliant and magnificent victory by our much-maligned and put-upon Armed Forces.

So, what are the Canadian headlines?

4 Canadians killed, others wounded in big battle with Taliban (The Calgary Sun)

Canadian soldiers among casualties in major NATO operation in Afghanistan (Canada.com)

3 Canadians soldiers killed (The Toronto Star)

NATO forces in Afghanistan suffer casualties (CTV)

4 Canadians killed, 9 injured in Afghan battle (CBC.ca)

Four Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan (The Globe and Mail)

Four killed (The National Post)

In other words, so far as the media is concerned, if we win we lose and if we lose we lose. One imagines that, if the modern media were transported back to 1944, the headlines on June 7th would have featured “340 Canadians Killed!” in 144 point type, with an unreadable subheader below reading “Allies Seize French Beachhead, Begin Liberation of Europe.”

This disgraceful, Pravda-worthy distortion of the truth does a grave disservice to the Canadian people and the cause of freedom. It is also an insult to all of the gallant Canadians serving overseas.

Comments:
What a dull comeback. I was hoping for something along the lines of 'Why it was vitally important that Israel kill as many Lebanese children as possible' or 'Why the British should have massacred everyone in High Wycombe and Walthamstow and then razed all their buildings to the ground - much quicker than all this tedious evidence-gathering'.

Still, I'm intrigued to see that you're using the second person plural in connection with Canadians - have you fallen out of love with Big Dubya, then?

The claim of 200 Taliban fighters killed has been repeated without question by major media, but no differently than the way the Pentagon would peddle figures claiming hundreds of Vietcong killed every other day during the Vietnam war, or hundreds of insurgents killed during the Fallujah offensive. The figures were then (and are today) entirely unverifiable, and given the Pentagon's well-documented history of inflating kill figures (as well as its own successes), that 200 Taliban killed is most likely an invention that, obviously, gets a lot of milage from what's essentially still a gullible, malleable public.

Does anyone else find it funny that Adam thinks the media is run by a vast left wing conspiracy, and that pierre tristam thinks it's run by a vast right wing conspiracy?

Is it reasonable to assume that the media gives slanted reports with more or less acurate facts (as accurate as they can get, anyway)?

We get this all the time in Britain, especially where the BBC and Israel are concerned. If you read the more frothing right-wing commentators, you'd be convinced that the BBC is the propaganda wing of Hamas...

...yet on two separate occasions (documented here and here), involving different researchers, the BBC's coverage of the Israel-Palestine situation has come under rigorous independent critical scrutiny, and the conclusion in both cases was that there was a slight but definite bias in Israel's favour.

People see what they want to see - Adam's blog being merely an extreme manifestation of this tendency.

"gallant Canadians serving overseas"

Are those the ones you've repeatedly over the last seven or eight years claimed you were going to join in the Canadian Forces?

Or are they the ones that you would willingly betray if your spooge-tastic fantasy of the US invading Canada were to come true?

As Michael said, a shockingly week return to the blog Adi.

Oh and "Pravda-worthy distortion of the truth". Oh yes, facts do have a liberal bias, don't they?

Chuckle. I'll remember that the next time you call for the bleach injection of a left-wing activist or Liberal Party member.
